India Standard Time (IST) is 5:30 hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). This time zone is in use during standard time in: Asia. India Standard Time is a half-hour time zone. Its local time differs by 30 minutes instead of the normal whole hour.

India Standard Time (IST) is the time zone observed throughout India and Sri Lanka.

India, despite its size, only has one time zone. The country stretches 3000 km (about 1800 miles) from west to east, spanning roughly 30 degrees of longitude. In the US, this would be the same as Utah and New York sharing one very large time zone.

If the country were to base its time zones on solar time, it would have three 15-degree time zones, but since it only has one, the Sun rises almost 90 minutes earlier in Dong in the far east than in Guar Mota in the west.

A single time zone, like India has, can lead to a decline in sleep quality because of later sunsets.

All institutions across India follow IST. The school day starts at almost the same time everywhere, but children go to bed later and have reduced sleep in areas where the Sun sets later.

India is one of the few large countries that uses a single national time zone. The 5:30 offset was chosen as a compromise to cover the country’s east–west span.

In everyday usage, IST is often simply referred to as Indian Time. India Standard Time (IST) is a standard time zone fixed at UTC+5:30. India and Sri Lanka do not use Daylight Saving Time, so IST remains the same throughout the year.
