Geotab stands out for its unbeatable support options, which include 24/7 phone help and free installation aid, combined with an open API for extensive customization.

Our in-depth analysis of 20 fleet management systems across 51 different criteria found Geotab is a solid choice, particularly for small fleets that prioritize flexibility and support, making it one of the best fleet management software providers.

While it offers a good range of core features and a fast 15-second refresh rate, it’s more expensive than average, at an estimated $30 to $40 per month, and lacks some advanced tools, like traffic alerts, which are offered by top-tier rivals.

In this review, we’ll cover what you need to know about this fleet management software to decide if it’s the best pick for you and your fleet. You can also compare price quotes with a range of providers using our free comparison tool.

In this guide:

Key Takeaways

Geotab is built for small fleets that prioritize flexibility. The platform provides extensive customization options, with good core driver and vehicle management tools.

Geotab’s pricing is set by third-party resellers, with buying-to-own costing between $80-$120 for a single unit, and renting a hardware unit and software ranging from $30-$40 per vehicle, per month.

The software includes a broad range of fleet management features such as real-time GPS tracking, vehicle maintenance logs, and driver behavior monitoring.

While it’s more expensive than the industry average, Geotab lacks some of the features of Verizon Connect and Samsara.

Geotab Pricing and Value

Pricing and plans for Geotab products vary because third-party resellers are responsible for setting the retail price. This can be frustrating for businesses looking to scale back costs in the wake of tariff disruptions.

Our research shows that typically price ranges for buying-to-own are between $80 and $120 for a single unit, while renting a hardware unit and software from a third-party service will cost you $30 to $40 per vehicle, per month.

To find the best resellers, look for popular and well-reviewed software vendors for Geotab hardware, such as USA Fleet Solutions, GPS Fleet Management Solutions, or Fleet Hoster. Consider other local providers, too, depending on the state your fleet operates in. Top factors to keep in mind include the reseller’s contract terms, support quality, and hardware costs (if any).

Geotab itself offers five software plans for its hardware:

Base – Includes GPS location, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), driver ID, basic Input/Output Expander (IOX) support, and harsh braking detection

HOS – Everything in Base, plus Hours of Service (HOS), International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), and tachograph tracking

Pro – Everything in HOS, plus engine, accelerometer, and EV data collection

ProPlus – Everything in Pro, as well as active tracking and roadside assistance

Go – Everything in ProPlus, along with worldwide Wi-Fi support

The most notable differences are at the HOS tier, which is designed to meet regulatory mandates for the US and Canada, and the ProPlus tier, which is the only one to offer .

Geotab costs more than our picks for the best fleet management software: Verizon and Samsarastart at $23.50 and $27 per month, respectively. However, Verizon and Samsara offer far more features and integrations than Geotab, making them significantly better value for money.

On the other end of the scale is Fleetio, which boasts a rock-bottom starting cost of $4 per month. But you get what you pay for, because the service lacks hardware or any electronic logging device (ELD) compliance.

Installation and contracts

Geotab offers free installation and a demo (no free trial), as well as a 15-day cancellation notice that undercuts the 30-day minimum that’s standard for most fleet management services. It comes with a three-year contract minimum, which matches Verizon and Samsara, though Omnitracs offers a more flexible one-year initial contract.

The best way to learn exactly how much a Geotab service plan will cost your fleet is to contact Geotab directly. You can compare this to the industry standard for your personal needs by filling out Tech.co’s quick fleet management quotes comparison form.

What Driver and Vehicle Management Features Does Geotab Offer?

Geotab has a good selection of core fleet tools overall, although it scores slightly better for driver tools than for vehicle ones (it lacks theft prevention, for example). Fleet managers will get real-time fleet maps with reporting and alerts for safety habits and fuel use.

However, they won’t receive the extra-mile features offered by leading fleet management vendors Verizon and Samsara, which tied across both categories by delivering every feature we wanted. Geotab does not offer theft prevention or crash reporting, and has more limited maintenance reporting functionality in comparison with Verizon and Samara.

What vehicle maintenance and security features are included?

Common fleet management features: Maintenance scheduling and reminder alerts, maintenance records, and daily DVIR compliance checks for drivers.

But not as many as others: Verizon Connect Reveal has more methods for scheduling maintenance, as it tracks by time as well as mileage since the previous checkup. Plus, Spireon is another fleet management system that offers better maintenance tracking than Geotab, as it logs warranty expirations and license renewals in addition to standard elements, such as preventative maintenance routines, tire rotations, and oil changes.

Geotab offers strong diagnostics tools and helpful maintenance records.

Plus, Geotab has cargo tracking, but no theft prevention and no engine temperature tracking, two minor limitations that balance out an otherwise strong vehicle management toolset.

What's New for Geotab in November 2025?

Geotab rolls out new features and updates every month. Most recently, the brand added a new EV performance page for tracking electric vehicle data, which is now available to admins under the “Sustainability” section in MyGeotab.

The company also tweaked the MyGeotab user interface, centralizing certain tools under the main Maintenance and Safety sections. “System” is now gone entirely from the left-hand navigation menu, so system settings and the audit log will need to be located under the Profile menu instead.

How does Geotab handle fuel management?

Geotab fuel reports

Geotab’s fuel reports can be quickly scanned as charts or downloaded as reports. Source: Geotab

Geotab’s fuel management system is available on Pro and ProPlus plans only.

It tracks trends on fuel usage and fill-ups, in addition to critical engine data for proactive vehicle maintenance.

The service’s speed control also helps to keep vehicles moving at the most fuel-efficient speeds.

Geotab has third-party fuel card integrations, another reason the platform is a good fit for companies that need flexible software they can custom-fit to their needs.

Our top picks for fuel-saving tools, in particular, are either NexTraq, which has a wider selection of integrations, or Azuga, which offers better route optimization features than Geotab, and can therefore reduce mileage to save fuel.

Geotab's dashboard lets users see driver safety scores, a live map, and fuel charts in the same view.

What safety features are included?

While these are all good features, Geotab does not go above and beyond. In contrast, RAM Tracking is our top pick for safety tools, despite scoring slightly under Geotab overall. RAM Tracking’s physical driver ID tags make for a more dependable solution than Geotab’s app-based driver ID, and it has theft prevention and crash reporting, both of which Geotab lacks.

Geotab Testimonial: National Express Auto Transport

“I’ve found Geotab to be an exceptional tool, particularly for optimizing vehicle routes and improving fuel efficiency. One benefit I’ve experienced is its impact on driver safety.

“Geotab provides real-time feedback on driver behavior, such as harsh braking or acceleration, which has helped us proactively address risky driving habits and reduce the likelihood of accidents.”

Carl Rodriguez, head of logistics at National Express Auto Transport

What Vehicle Tracking Features Does Geotab Offer?

Geotab offers decent tracking tools, with a fast refresh time and broad range of features that cover most needs, with the exception of traffic alerts, which are not provided. Geotab is in the mid-range overall (eighth place out of 20 fleet management solutions for this research category) and is surpassed by Verizon’s perfect tracking score.

Common fleet management tools and tracking features that Geotab supports include:

Custom reporting (vehicle data, fuel usage, maintenance needs, mileage by driver, and idling events are all covered, though Verizon offers more complex reporting, such as tracking non-productive idle times).

Geofencing with both manager emails and in-vehicle audio alerts. Third-party GPS providers are not supported through the software, which is typical for the fleet management industry, since only the most complex GPS service can improve on what Geotab already offers.

Custom locations, offering map software that allows users to tailor their map views, legends, and zone shapes or sizes, and ultimately maximize route efficiency – which is the reason that 22% of logistics professionals give as why their company should invest in tech, according to a recent Tech.co survey. Even some competitors that we rank higher overall, such as Motive, do not offer custom locations.

Automatic route optimization, ensuring your fleet is always on the most efficient route.

Geotab’s hardware is capable of a fast 15-second refresh time (available across all plans) that is also above average, compared with the standard 30-second refresh rate offered by industry leaders like Verizon and Samsara.

What’s not in Geotab’s arsenal? Traffic alerts, a benefit that Verizon, Samsara, Teletrac, and others deploy to help drivers adjust to unexpected delays.

This quick video explains the main functions of Geotab’s safety software and how it has evolved to reduce false positives when detecting harsh driving events. Geotab’s YouTube channel also has plenty of training and installation advice videos, if you want to introduce the technology into your team.

What Help and Support Does Geotab Offer?

Our research found that Geotab stands out for its support options, earning a perfect score that is matched only by one other fleet management system – OmnitracsGeotab provides 24/7 phone support, even on holidays, and it offers chatbot and email support options as well.

Many of the biggest fleet management providers match Geotab’s 24/7 phone hours: Verizon Connect Reveal, Samsara, and Teletrac Navman are the three highest-rated. But Verizon and Samsara don’t offer the same installation help Geotab does, while Teletrac doesn’t offer the chatbot tool that further aids Geotab customers.

Geotab has an open API and supports unlimited users, making it likely the most customizable fleet management solution on the market.

What Hardware Does Geotab Use?

Geotab Go ELD devices

In addition to its flexible MyGeotab software, Geotab sells the Geotab GO device. The most recent model in this hardware unit series is the Geotab GO9, which includes a 32-bit processor as well as four times the memory and eight times the RAM of the GO8. Other core specs include:

G-force monitoring

Auto-calibrating accelerometer and gyroscope

Engine and battery health assessments

LTE network connectivity

Collision detection

In-vehicle alerts

End-to-end cybersecurity

Unit-specific IDs and non-static security keys are included with each device as another layer of security. Each unit weighs 0.15 lbs, with 75mm by 50mm by 23mm dimensions.

Users won’t have to rely on the Geotab hardware, however. True to the brand’s reputation for flexibility, the Geotab software will work with any third-party hardware device that uses CAN, USB, RS-232, or BLE interfaces.

Each Geotab GO unit can be integrated with third-party software as well, and can be bought from partners within Geotab’s list of authorized resellers, which includes brands like Fleetistics, Didcom, or Fleet Nav Systems, among many more.

Anyone can request Geotab hardware from the company for their testing or development needs through this online form.

How Do You Install Geotab?

Geotab comes with detailed installation documentation, and customers can find an authorized installer in their area as well. There are also installation tips on the company’s YouTube channel.

You won’t need professional help for the Go hardware devices since, like many fleet management units, they can be plugged into an OBDII port, but the heartier Go Rugged device comes with a more complex hardwired option.

The service’s cloud-based software will not integrate with third-party GPS navigators, but that isn’t uncommon for a fleet management system. Only the two most feature-rich competitors, Verizon and Samsara, offer these integrations.

Geotab offers a mobile app for drivers on iOS (just 2.2 stars out of 5) and Android (3 stars out of 5), as well as a fleet manager app, MyGeotab Fleet Management, on both platforms. Due in part to these apps and range of installation options, Geotab earns a strong product feature score from us, putting it among the top three fleet management solutions in this area.

Geotab vs Alternatives: Key Specs

Of course, Geotab is by no means the only fleet management option on the market. As we’ve alluded to throughout this article, there are several alternatives that are well worth looking into, depending on what you’re looking for and how much you’re willing to pay.

Our pick of providers is actually Verizon Connect, which lays claim to exceptional functionality, 30-second refresh rates, and 24/7 phone support. Similarly, Samsara has an enviable set of features, quick refresh rates, and round-the-clock support.

With so many options on the market, it can be difficult to know where to start. That’s why we’ve put together a table of Geotab alternatives with a focus on key specifications, to give you a better sense of  how these providers stack up head to head when it comes to the stuff that really matters. Methodology: How We Rated and Reviewed Geotab

We take our impartial research and analysis seriously, so you can have complete confidence that we're giving you the clearest, most useful recommendations.

After conducting an initial exploration to identify the most relevant, popular, and established tools in the market, we put them through their paces with a research framework designed in-house to see their real strengths and weaknesses. In this case, we analyzed 20 fleet management products across 51 different areas of investigation.

Based on years of market and user needs research, we've established a fleet management testing methodology that scores each product in six core assessment areas and six additional subcategories, covering everything, from the driver management features to value for money, customer support, and much more.

Our main testing categories for fleet management systems are:

Price: The cost associated with using the fleet management software, including upfront costs, subscription fees, hardware costs (if applicable), and any additional charges for advanced features or add-ons.

Tracking: The core functionality of the fleet management software, which involves monitoring and tracking the location and movements of vehicles in real-time, including features such as GPS tracking, route optimization, and geofencing.

Driver management: The features and tools provided by the fleet management software to manage and monitor driver activities. This can include driver behavior monitoring, driver performance reports, and driver identification.

Vehicle management: The functionalities that allow for the efficient management and maintenance of vehicles, such as vehicle health monitoring and maintenance scheduling.

Product features: The additional functionalities and capabilities offered by the fleet management software, beyond basic tracking and management, such as real-time alerts and notifications, or driver routing and dispatching.

Support: The resources, assistance, and guidance provided by the fleet management software company to users, including phone support, email or chat support, and online forums.

When it comes to calculating a product's final score, not all testing and research categories are weighted evenly, as we know some aspects matter more to our readers than others, which are merely “nice to have”. After hundreds of hours, our process is complete, and the results should ensure you can find the best solution for your needs.

At Tech.co, we have a number of full-time in-house researchers, who re-run testing and research processes regularly to ensure our results remain reflective of the present day.

The Verdict: Is Geotab a Good Option?

Geotab has a set of strengths: it’s a dependable fleet management system, with decent features for vehicle and driver tracking and good reporting tools that will meet most fleets’ needs, even if they don’t surpass them. Plus, it stands out for support, with 24/7 phone cover, chatbot help, and free installation.

That said, it has downsides: the service comes with a starting price that’s above the industry average, and doesn’t offer all the tools you’ll get from industry leaders like Verizon Connect or Samsara.

We recommend Geotab for fleets that need a reliable fleet system provider, since Geotab has an open API and availability through third-party resellers, which is relatively rare for these systems.

If you still need more information, take the next step and get quotes from all the best fleet management solutions on the market.
