Mitsuha is a high school girl living in a rural town deep in the mountains. One day, she dreams that she is a boy living in Tokyo. Meanwhile, Taki, a high school boy living in Tokyo, also has a strange dream. He dreams that he is a high school girl living in the countryside. The strange dreams are recurring, and the two realize that they are switching places with each other. Through the notes they leave behind, they overcome their situation. Sometimes the pair fight, whilst sometimes they enjoy each other's life. However, just as their feelings begin to open up, the dreams suddenly stop.
