News Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina Appoints Ruphin Fortunat Zafisambo as New Prime Minister
• President Andry Rajoelina appointed General Ruphin Fortunat Zafisambo as Prime Minister after dissolving the government on September 29. Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina appointed General Ruphin Fortunat Zafisambo as Prime Minister on October 6, state television reported. The move came a week after the president dissolved his government in response to widespread protests. Local media cited Rajoelina as saying Zafisambo must “restore public trust, revive the economy, and improve daily life.” The new premier must also strengthen public order and deliver quick solutions to water and electricity shortages.
Before his appointment, Zafisambo served as chief of staff of both the civilian and military cabinets of the Prime Minister’s office. He now faces the task of forming a new government. Rajoelina dissolved the government on September 29 after demonstrations by young protesters from the “Gen Z” movement. They denounced recurring power and water cuts. The United Nations said the unrest left at least 22 people dead and more than 100 injured. The World Bank projects Madagascar’s economy to expand 4% in 2025, supported by investment, construction, and tourism. Agricultural output is expected to contract.
