Some of my fellow scientists are ending the year talking about 'hope.' I won't be joining them. Instead, as we wind down the year, I want to talk about Action. The actions by a few protesters on roads all over the world who put their bodies on the line The actions of youth spending their precious free time rallying and speaking out The actions of my fellow scientists who are switching fields to work on climate change The actions of The Ocean Cleanup, TreePeople, the hundreds of farmers who reached out to me to talk climate, The actions of fearless forest defenders tied to old growth trees in BC and indigenous leaders stopping pipelines in NWT And the persistent actions of those who have been in the field for years, speaking truth to power. As we wind down to take some well deserved rest, I challenge us all to plan for a year of actions- big and small- and leave the hope (or thoughts and prayers?) in 2022.
